What to Wear to Your Maternity Session

Your session is approaching and you are staring into your closet… rows of clothes with nothing to wear!

This happens with any woman, but I can’t imagine trying to figure out what to wear when you are 30+ weeks pregnant!  I am already applauding you for wanting a maternity portrait session.  Only about 50% of my families choose a maternity session.  It is my job to make you feel BEAUTIFUL during your session and one way I can help is your wardrobe!  My number one tip is to make sure you are 100% comfortable in whatever you choose.  That also includes the shoes you choose!  Our session will more than likely be outside and require some light walking.  Please remember this when choosing your outfit!

Here are some examples of what other HMP Mommas have worn to their sessions!

Maxi Dresses

If your session is scheduled for those long, hot summer nights, a maxi dress may be perfect for your session!  Maxi dresses are known as the dress version of yoga pants!  They are super comfortable and breathable; perfect for July and August humidity!

My tip would to choose a dress that is flowy, but isn’t too loose.  We want to enhance your bump, but make sure you are not frumpy.  So make sure your dress has the right amount of fabric and still hugs that bump!

Little Black Dress

Black dresses are VERY popular for maternity sessions!  It is no secret the color black is very slimming.  If you choose to wear black for your session, I recommend pairing with a bright/colorful necklace or scarf.  Also, you can dress the father to be in that same accent color.

Cute and Casual

If you are not one to wear a lot of dresses, don’t feel like you have to for your maternity session!  Some girls are more comfortable in jeans and a tshirt, and there is nothing wrong with that!  While I would avoid the tshirt part, opt for a nice sweater or blouse.  For this look, I would avoid patterns that are too busy.  We want all the focus on that bump and sometimes it is hard to see it with a bold pattern.

How to Dress your Guy

As if the stress of finding the perfect isn’t enough, our guys are looking at us to dress them too!  I can help you find the right outfit combinations.  If you are planning to wear a bold pattern/color, make sure your guy is dressed in a neutral, complimentary, PLAIN shirt!  Be very careful when more than one person in a session is wearing a print.  It is very hard to pull off, but it can be done!

Choosing a complimentary color is easy.  If you are wearing a black dress and wearing a coral necklace, put your guy in a coral shirt!  Avoid wearing the same exact color.  Sometimes, the same color but different hues can work.  This works great with greys!

How to Dress Your Family

If there is a Big Brother or Sister to be, they are going to shine during your maternity session!  To dress your entire family, I would use the same advice as how to dress your guy!
