The year was 2010 and I had my new Nikon D3100 for about 6 months now. I wanted to learn more about my camera and ALLLLLL those settings! What better way to practice than by asking my best friend if I can borrow her kid!
Gianna is very special to me; I am her Godmother! It was a little selfish taking her out on a super bright Saturday afternoon because I wanted some pictures myself to hang in my new house!
We met at Pennington Park in Delanco (still a favorite of mine.) Gianna was giving me a hard time about posing. I was making the mistake of trying to get a 5 year old to stay still! After about an hour of trying some portraits, I decided it was time to have some fun. Gianna’s mother stood out of the frame to add more leaves as Gianna as many leaves as her tiny hands could hold.
I shot this session in auto mode, on kit lens. I did not know what RAW was or even depth of field. I did not pay attention to any lighting or composition. I was just having fun and clicked away.
When I got home and uploaded her session to my computer, I saw this. I was floored! Little old me TOOK THIS! I posted to Facebook right away and got outstanding reviews from people I looked up to.
This image right here is what I needed to decide to become a photographer!
5 years later, we decided to recreate it!
As I write this post and look back at that image, I see so much wrong with it. However, I realize I will never be able to truly recreate it for two reasons. One, the best part of photography is that it captures that one moment in time and no matter how hard you try, you will never get that exact moment back. Two, I am not the same photographer as I was 5 years ago! I have learned so much about photography and myself.
I want to thank all of you who have followed me from the beginning.
